WHY THE HACKNEY KILN IS OPENING
Sheila started pottery last year and became obsessed. But she soon grew frustrated by how inaccessible and expensive it is.
After taking 2 courses of classes at a studio, she wanted to start making at home. But that is where the challenges started...
First issue - no kiln! If you don't want to commit to a studio, or don't have the space or money for your own kiln, the only option is to hire a full kiln load. At the studios in East London this was around £90 and you have to wait for up to 4 weeks for collection.
Second issue: glaze. Why isn't there somewhere in London where you can see test tiles from a number of glaze brands in one place or even get samples? You wouldn't buy an entire pot of Dulux to test out the colour on your wall, you buy a sample pot. Why can’t the same be said for pottery glazing?
Other issues... Which clay is best? Which tools are essential? And so on...
